Post mastectomy exercise plays an important role in releasing muscular tension, preventing scar tissue development and restoring strength and flexibility to joints and muscles that have been affected by the surgery. It is particularly important to help prevent any swelling in your affected arm.
her physio will devise and guide you through an exercise program and help manage any upper body pain or motion limitations you may experience.
We will advise daily exercise for the first six to eight weeks after your surgery. We will also help you to maintain good posture after your surgery to recover full arm function.
It is important when exercising that you let pain be your guide – it is normal to feel a gentle stretch but you should not feel pain.
We will also advise you on which activities you should and shouldn't do (i.e. don’t use your arm on the affected side for heavy tasks such as vacuuming, hanging out washing or window cleaning for the first six weeks after your surgery).
her physio is here to help.
